Many thanks for such an excellent workshop. No matter how lacking in confidence any of us felt at the start, I came away feeling I had taken some major steps forward in gaining an understanding of the camera, backed up by your superb and helpful notes.

FULL OUTLINE OF THE WORKSHOP

THIS popular one-day workshop is designed specifically for beginners to creative landscape photography and provides an intensive day of classroom and location-based tuition in Swaledale in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

The workshop will appeal most to photographers who are keen to learn new technical skills with their digital SLR camera that will eventually enable them to develop a creative eye for landscape photography and move beyond the rut of only taking a snapshot of the view at a location.

The workshop has a maximum group size of just five, whereas some workshops can have 10 photographers or more and this means you will receive one-to-one tuition while out on location.

It is the small group and individual nature of the tuition that has made workshop leader Garry Brannigan one of the country's most popular instructors of creative landscape photography, with many returning photographers booking two years ahead to join him. Garry does not make any of his own photographs while teaching, so he is able to offer his tuition at a level that is right for you.

The emphasis in the first section of the workshop is to demonstrate how the technical quality of your landscape photographs improves significantly when you take control of the decision-making and use your SLR camera in a manual way rather than relying on its automatic settings.

The second objective is to show how your enjoyment and success increases substantially when you spend time at a location and allow yourself to think through the making of a photograph rather than rushing off a record shot and quickly moving on to the next location.

The day's programme begins by encouraging photographers to gain an appreciation for the many different forms of light that we use in landscape photography. While strong directional light can seem initially appealing, there are many other forms of overcast and rounded light that can be used with equal reward.

Next, you will learn what "depth of field" is and then how to develop an understanding for aperture selection and the different types of depth of field that can be created.

Because our SLR cameras enable us to vary the lenses we use, the next part of the workshop demonstrates the different focal lengths available to landscape photographers and the exciting creative opportunities they offer.

We then go on to investigate the many settings on your digital SLR camera. You will learn how the white balance controls the colour temperature; how the quality changes between Jpeg and RAW settings and why RAW is ideal for producing a successful print; how faster shutter speeds can come from changing the ISO levels; and, most importantly, how we use the histogram to achieve successful exposures.

Then we examine how neutral density graduated filters enable you to record areas of excessive tonal contrast, often between the sky and the land.

The classroom section of the workshop finishes by looking at how we focus the camera to achieve the maximum amount of sharpness in our photographs.

After lunch the group heads out to a location in Swaledale to put what has been learned into practice. Here we begin to explore the creative aspects of landscape photography, looking first at how we find the subject and then how we use the elements within the landscape to build simple but strong compositions.

The Digital Dawn Introduction to Creative Landscape Photography Workshop costs £175. The price includes group and one-to-one tuition, lunch, transport to the location plus extensive course notes and follow-up email and telephone advice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Why should I choose a Digital Dawn workshop?

Perhaps the main reason is that our group size is never more than five photographers, whereas some photographic courses and workshops can have 10 or more. This smaller group size means you receive a larger amount of personal tuition out on location. It also means we can visit more varied locations and have more elbow room when we get there. Also, course leader Garry Brannigan will not be using your time making his own images. All his time out on location is spent alongside photographers giving them individual tuition. It's a combination that has proved successful and a large proportion of photographers return for additional courses at a different location.

What type of camera and equipment do I need for this one-day workshop?

You will need a digital SLR camera to get the most from of this workshop. After your camera and lenses, the most essential item is a tripod. It is heavy to carry around, but landscape photography often involves freeing yourself from holding the camera and using a sturdy tripod will have a direct effect on both the technical and creative quality of your photographs. Also, it is not possible for the course leader to help with your compositions if the camera is hand-held. Please contact us if you would like advice on buying a tripod before coming on the workshop.

What level of experience do I need for this workshop?

You may be completely new to using a digital SLR camera or making the switch from film to digital. Either way, the One-day Introduction to Digital Landscape Photography Workshop is ideal for anyone who is keen to learn about landscape photography and to know how their digital SLR camera works away from the automatic settings. Because of the small group size you'll enjoy individual attention and receive the tuition at a level that is right for you.

Do I need any filters?

During the workshop you will learn how neutral density graduated filters enable you to record areas of excessive tonal contrast, often between the sky and the land and how they have a significant impact on the exposure of your images. Please contact us if you would like advice on buying these filters or a polariser before coming on the workshop.

How fit do I need to be?

This Yorkshire Dales workshop involves a small amount of walking away from the road, some across uneven ground, but none of it is strenuous.

TREVOR SELWYN, One-Day Workshop

I feel so much more confident now about getting the exposure and depth of field right and much more prepared to look around me for less obvious, but ultimately more rewarding images. I do a lot of training myself and I have nothing but praise for your techniques and approach to the day. I will recommend you highly to any of my friends interested in a similar course.
