Advancing Rain, Quiraing, Isle of Skye by Tad Moyseowicz

The Digital Dawn's approach is to teach landscape photographers the essential technical and creative skills needed to capture the moment when weather, light and timing all align themselves to produce the ingredients for a unique and individual image. But there is still something extra, an additional ingredient that we all strive to bring to our image making...and that is to capture the essence of the landscape we are in.

Tad Moyseowicz's Advancing Rain image above has that essential quality...it has captured the essence of the Isle of Skye and perhaps that is the reason why it received the most votes in our annual competition and earned Tad a £500 voucher towards another course.

Naturally, the location and composition are of great importance, but they alone do not guarantee success. Ultimately, the image has to create a strong response in the person who looks at it. As one photographer who voted for Tad's image said: "I have been to Skye and this picture captures so well the way the weather can change in a moment. To describe the scenery so completely with one image is pretty special. The clarity of light and just the hint of colour are awesome. I can almost feel the weather!"

Nearly 500 viewers voted in this year's competition and there was not a single image among the 33 contenders that did not receive someone's vote, which says a lot about the overall standard of the photography. Other images that collected a large number of votes were No 4 David Jenkins's Before The Dawn at Dunstanburgh and No 13 Dawn Calm, Lower Breakish, Isle of Skye by Joe Bowes.
